16 Tons 12 Km/h

A duo exhibition by Romi Ben Yosef and Achinoam Mendelson

About a year after the outbreak of the war in Israel, Achinoam Mendelson found herself confined to her home. The closure of the airport, the threat of missile attacks, and the designation of large areas as dangerous drastically narrowed her living space.

This sense of suffocation sparked a desire to escape. to set out on a journey, even when there was nowhere to go. In response, she decided to purchase a mobility scooter, a vehicle with a maximum speed of 12 km/h, commonly associated in Israel with kibbutzim and the elderly.
The scooter was purchased from an elderly couple of Italian immigrants, among the founders of Kibbutz Regavim. At the time of purchase, Mendelson promised to preserve the name they had given it: Carolina. Carolina becomes the central figure in Mendelson’s lyrical performance. At times moving independently through an autonomous motion mechanism, and at others guided by the steady hand of its driver. It emits a flickering light, like a lighthouse, or like a probe surveying a planet in search of refuge.
